Lapbooks are a fun way to reinforce the various lessons and used by many homeschool parents. You can
also incorporate art,
writing, handwriting, spelling, grammar, math and other subjects in any lapbook if you
want. My daughter has commented many times "this is fun". While we still do some assessments,
between doing the lapbooks and increasing our the amount of time we spend on field trips and
hands on type experiments/activities, we have cut down the worksheets significantly.
One skill we are working to develop is "presentation". Making the lapbook nice and neat so that
anyone can pick it up and understand it. Also, making it interesting. We don't want to produce
a lapbook that just has words on it or a pyramid fold just because. When I think about a good
business presentation in the real world, an impact powerpoint heavily uses visuals to get the message
across. So, we are starting young in getting them to think about the message and visually depict
it. A good skill to learn.
We don't spend alot of money on the materials. Mostly we either take pictures of relevant
objects ourselves and print them or use images we found on the internet. Folders are pretty
cheap and we use whatever other materials we have laying around like felt, color paper, foam,
etc. Scrapbooking materials work great too.
I've tried to provide enough info where you don't have to start from scratch on your lapbook, but
also allow you to customize it and gear it to different grade levels.
Here's an idea for a forest lapbook that combines both rain forest and temperate forest information.
While a third grader did this, it can be adapted for younger or older. The focus is on adaptations
of forest animals and plants.

The Kaya Lapbook is based on Book One in the Kay American Girl Historical Fiction Series. This was
the first lapbook we ever did so it is a little heavy on words. However, it is a little bit more
fun to do than just worksheets and assessments.
This is NOT a Social Studies Lapbook. It is intended to be more of a reading comprehension lapbook.
My daughter LOVED the books. I didn't think they would be good given the mediocre reviews at
Amazon. However, I found the books pretty interesting. Yes, the stories could've flowed better
between books, but It was still entertaining and there is also some wonderful factual information
at the end of each book about the Nez Perce Indians.
The geometry and measurement lapbook covers most elementary geometry and measurment concepts. Its purpose
is to provide both a hands on learning activity and a handy reference once it is completed. The student is
given instructions to build a simple shape house based on polygons, triangles, etc. Once they have built the
house, they need to label each shape and include the definitions.
This multiplication lapbook is a game that makes remembering your multiplcation facts fun. It can
be played with one person. This is a very time consuming lapbook to make. An online game version
is coming soon.
